Only One Socks
The flight landed with broad smiles plastered across their faces, signifying the magnitude of their achievement. Arun and Madhavan, not only did they get the chance to represent their country in the National Games, but they also clinched the top spot in their respective categories. Since childhood, their sole ambition had been to become marathon runners and proudly don the colors of their nation. They left no stone unturned in their pursuit, doing everything within their power to make their dreams a reality. Their families beamed with pride, and a sense of accomplishment enveloped them. Arun and Madhavan were overjoyed, yet their satisfaction was short-lived, knowing that their next tournament loomed a mere two months away.
One foggy morning, the friends decided to seek solace in the tranquility of nature, unaware of the impending tragedy that would alter the course of their lives forever.
Arun tried desperately to steer the motorbike left, but alas, it was too late. Two vehicles collided, resulting in multiple fatalities and several grave injuries.
Only after six agonizing hours did the doctors gather the courage to divulge the condition of the champions. Fortunately, Arun had escaped internal injuries, but Madhavan had tragically lost a leg. It was a big shock to their families but the thought of breaking the news to the runners made them more concerned.
When Arun was informed that he would recover in six months and be match-ready, he erupted in protest. "No! No! No! I can't miss the tournament! Running is my life. If I can't run, what else is there for me?" he cried out, his passion and devotion on full display.
"Arun may only miss one tournament, but what about Madhavan? He'll never be able to run again." reported a neighbor. The neighbor's words were however harsh but true.
"He won't be able to bear this pain." interjected Madhavan's mother.
Finally, when everyone gathered to inform Madhavan of his condition, he listened calmly, his lips widened mysteriously. After a pause, he said, "Oh! That is good news! Now I'll have to wear socks on one leg only."
