The Man Under A Tree
The old grandma's voice quavered with emotion as she recounted her late husband's final wishes. "He wanted his remains to be immersed in the holy Ganges in India," she said, her eyes misty with tears.
Victor, a young business sensation, had lost his beloved grandfather just days ago. Accompanied by his grieving grandmother, he now found himself on a flight to India. As they landed in Prayagraj, the sun beat down upon them with unforgiving heat. Victor wondered why they had to come all the way to India when they could have arranged everything in their hometown, but he said nothing.
The next morning, the preparations for the immersion ceremony were in full swing. Victor watched patiently as he observed the customs and rituals that would offer his grandfather eternal peace. And then, his attention was drawn to a man lying under a tree with a gamcha draped over him. He felt an unknown attraction towards that man.
"Since when have you been lying here?" Victor asked the man, his curiosity piqued.
"I have been lying here since morning," the man replied, his eyes half-closed.
"Have you no work today?" Victor pressed on.
"I don't do any work," the man answered with a cracking voice.
"How do you make a living?" Victor asked, now genuinely intrigued.
"I have farms, and I get food from there," the man responded.
Victor was puzzled. "But why don't you at least go fishing? There's a river here. You could easily earn some money."
"Ah! good , what will happen then?" the man asked, his eyes still half-closed.
"Then you can buy a big net to catch more fish with the earned money," Victor suggested.
"What will happen then?" the man repeated his question.
"You can hire people to work for you and make your business even bigger," Victor replied, excited by the possibilities.
"What will happen then?" the man asked again, his voice growing stronger.
"Then you will make much more money," Victor replied confidently.
"What will happen then?" the man persisted.
"Then you can have a big house, cars, and anything you want," Victor responded, his voice rising with enthusiasm.
"What will happen then?" the man asked once more, his voice calm and measured.
"Then you will be very comfortable in your life and can rest," Victor concluded, convinced that he had made his point.
The man paused for a moment, and then, with a wry smile on his face, he asked, "What do you think I am doing now?"
